Dr Elena Pizzo

Elena Pizzo is a Senior Health Economist in the Department of Applied Health Research, at University College London, England. She is Deputy Lead of the Health Economics and Data Theme of the NIHR ARC North Thames and Health Economist of the ARC Research Partnership Team.

She is expert advisor for the Surgical Intervention Trial Unit at UCL and for the Connect4Children pan-European Network for European Clinical Trials for Children. She is currently expert health economist for the NIHR HTA CET funding committee. Prior to UCL she was a Research Associate at the Imperial College Business School in London.

She holds a BSc in Economics and Administration (Padua University, Italy), an MSc in Economics and Management of Health Care Services (Ferrara University, Italy) and a PhD in Economics and Management (Padua University, Italy). She has been a visiting PhD at the University of York.

Elena is particularly interested in economic evaluation of health technologies and interventions, clinical decision analysis and HTA. She is currently Co-investigator lead Health Economist in at least 12 NIHR awarded research projects in the main areas of cancer (peritoneal, pancreatic, prostatic, renal, penile and breast cancer), mental health and alcohol addiction, and diabetes.

She is a member of the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Health Economics and Policy, for Plos One and Frontiers Public Health and she is an expert reviewer for several peer review international scientific journals (European Journal of Health Economics, BMJ Open, British Journal of Cancer, Value in Health, Pharmacoeconomics, International Journal of Health Economics and Policy, Journal of Health Policy, Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, British Journal of Dermatology, BMC Health Services Research, Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management, Medicine and Politiche Sanitarie).

Elena is a Member of the International Health Economics Association (iHEA), the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR), the Health Economists’ Study Group (HESG) and the Italian Association of Health Economics (AIES).

To date she (co)authored 33 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and published 4 books chapters on health economics, public health, health technology assessment, health policy and quality improvement. GoogleScholar: Citation 668, Hirsh index 14.

She has successfully supervised the completion of 3 PhD thesis, one is completing in 2021 and she is currently supervising 2 new PhD students. She has successfully supervised 20 MSc students nationally and internationally.

Elena has more than 15 years experience in teaching Health Economics, HTA, Pharmacoeconomics and Economic Evaluation at undergraduate, post graduate and executive level, both nationally (UCL, Imperial College, LSE, City University) and internationally (Ca’ Foscari Venice, Bologna University, Cattolica Rome, Padua University, Menorca University Spain).

She has been invited to present the results of her research as a keynote speaker to more than 20 international conferences and as presenter to other 26 in the last 10 years.
